If you can find out what you did (or didn't do!) to cause the breakup then you could be well on your way to getting back together. If you are on speaking terms with your ex then arrange to meet and have a chat like adults. Keep your emotions in check at all times, you can't be seen as being desperate at this point.
When I did this I had a good chat with my partner and we cleared the air. When I found out what the main reason was for the breakup I was astounded, it seemed so trivial. When you find out what the reason or reasons are then you can take steps to put things right.
